I was born in East Anglia in the U.K., a region of big skies, clear light, winding rivers and the North Sea. Although I was always drawn to art I pursued a career in engineering and put art on hold. But it was impossible to escape my need to paint and when I came to the U.S. over twenty years ago I went back to painting and developed my skills in oil and pastel painting. Although I never had any formal art training I learned as much as I could, joined a local art league and worked to try and capture the feeling of light and atmosphere in nature. I also became interested in the art of the portrait and the challenge of capturing personality in a painting. Learning to paint is a task that never ends; to quote Degas, "Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do."

My work has won numerous awards locally and has been featured in "The Art of the Portrait," the magazine for the Portrait Society of America, of which I am a member.
